June 14, 2008: Lattuada's "Mafioso"

I'm going to keep a running record of films viewed. Here are three recent viewings:

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - As much as I loved the first film, Elizabeth, and adore Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) and Clive Owen (Raleigh), this film blows. Fragmented, music-video-ish, slow-motiony, billowy, set-piecey nonsense. A tremendous let-down. C-

Michael Clayton - Highly entertaining legal thriller with George Clooney in the title role, the fabulous Tilda Swinton as an evil corporate attorney, and the always excellent (and ubiquitous) Tom Wilkinson as a lawyer who has suffered a moral meltdown and is ready to rat out his corrupt clients. Tightly paced and well-scripted, with excellent performances and strong cinemtography. A

Mafioso - Albert Lattuada's 1962 mob tragicomedy starring the great Alberto Sordi as an upstanding Milan auto factory quality control expert whose first vacation with his wife and two girls brings them to his native Sicily and into the sphere of an old associate--an aging mafia boss. An outstanding film, recently cleaned up and re-released. Probably the truest film I've seen about the mafia, The Godfather and Goodfellas notwithstanding. A+

And here's the requisite Ian picture:

Hasta Luego,
